Three minutes of silence in China • Americans are advised to wear mouth cover

A 104-year-old American survived the coronavirus. World War II veteran Bill Lapschies contracted the virus in a veteran home in Oregon state in early March. Then his health went up and down, his relatives say The Washington Post. One day Lapschies seemed to get better, and the next day it relapsed. Until he only got better and eventually was allowed to return to his veteran home.

He was out of the hospital just in time to celebrate his 104th birthday with his family. When he was rolled out in his wheelchair, his granddaughter Jamie Yutzie saw the “infectious smile” around her grandfather’s mouth again, she said.

Lapschies is one of the oldest corona survivors worldwide. He was 2 years old when Spanish flu swept the world, killing tens of millions. In 1943 he was drafted into the United States Army, after which he spent World War II on the Aleutian Islands, an archipelago between the US and Russia.
