Three million plastic bottles collected in the Carrefour Chartres parking lot

The inhabitants of Chartrains and the surrounding area have deposited more than 3 million plastic bottles at the collection machine located in the Carrefour car park. This is an event for the Tri-Center brand which markets these machines, the Carrefour one being the first Solartrio to be established in France.

The associate director of the company Tri-Center Pierre-Olivier Abor explains:

We want to thank all the Chartrains for their participation and congratulate them for their commitment.

Inaugurated in August 2018, the Solartrio has already made it possible to recycle 100 tonnes of plastic bottles. In Chartres, an average of 7 times more PET is collected (100% recyclable plastic, editor’s note) than in other cities. During the month of June, on average, nearly 5,000 bottles were collected per day.

Operation

Such a quantity is actually possible thanks to a baling press integrated in the automat. “Once collected, the colorless bottles are recycled into other bottles by the company Plastipak near Dijon, and the others are transformed and used in textiles or construction,” explains Pierre-Olivier Abor. In addition, the Solartrio is a hybrid machine. A solar panel supplies power to an LED screen used for broadcasting environmental announcements and advertising messages.

A double interest

Although environmental commitment is the primary motivation for users, there is a real economic stake for Carrefour store customers who are paid at the rate of 2 cents per bottle. In total, it is € 60,000 which were donated to Carrefour customers through vouchers.

On her own, Françoise Bardaud, the most active user of the Chartres machine, accumulated € 1,865 in purchasing power in 2020.

In the future, new Solartrios should be inaugurated in France, boosted by the return to deposit bill planned for 2023.
