Three men died in northern England on Thursday when their car ended up in a river. They are the first fatalities from Storm Gerrit, which has been ravaging the United Kingdom since Wednesday.
According to a witness who tried to help the three, the weather conditions made it very dangerous to drive in North Yorkshire.
In the hours after the crash, two other cars became stuck in the same river that overflowed its banks. All occupants of those vehicles have been found safe, North Yorkshire Police said.
The north of England and Scotland in particular were hit hard by storm Gerrit. About a hundred houses were damaged in Manchester. In Scotland the wind reached speeds of up to 136 kilometers per hour.
Due to storm Gerrit, code yellow applies on Thursday evening in North Holland and the Wadden area.
