Three Mass Shootings in Chicago Area Over Father’s Day Weekend Leave Multiple Dead and Dozens Injured

Three mass shootings occurred in the Chicago area over Father’s Day weekend, leaving a total of 33 people shot and three dead. The largest shooting took place in a southwest Chicago suburb, while the other two occurred in the city of Chicago.

The first shooting occurred around 4:40 a.m. on Saturday near Lincoln Park Zoo. Five people were wounded, with four of them in critical condition. Among the victims was a 17-year-old girl who was in fair condition. Police believe the shooting stemmed from a disagreement.

The second and most violent incident occurred just before 12:30 a.m. on Sunday during a Juneteenth celebration in Willowbrook. The celebration, near Hinsdale Lake Terrace, started peacefully but turned violent in the early morning hours. Multiple weapons were fired into the crowd by an unknown number of suspects. One person was killed, and at least 22 others were wounded. Several additional people were injured as they tried to flee from the gunfire. Police initially monitored the celebration but were called away to respond to another 911 call.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker expressed his concern and stated that gatherings for holiday celebrations should be joyful occasions, not marred by gunfire and families forced to run for safety.

President Joe Biden also offered assistance to state and local leaders in the wake of the tragedy. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tweeted that the President and First Lady were thinking of those killed and injured in the shooting.

Later on Sunday night, two men were killed and three others were wounded in a shooting at Smith Park in Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood. A group in a gray Honda sedan pulled up and opened fire. A 37-year-old man was killed, and another man was initially listed in critical condition but later pronounced dead at the hospital. Three others were in fair condition.

As of Monday morning, no one was in custody for any of the incidents. The shootings have sparked concern and calls for action to address the ongoing issue of gun violence in Chicago.
