Three people were killed in a rocket attack by Houthi rebels on a ship off the coast of Yemen on Wednesday. The US State Department and the US command center in the region confirm this, Centcom. These are the first fatalities since the Houthis attacked ships.

It concerns the freighter True Confidence. It was hit by a Houthis missile in the Gulf of Aden. Then a fire broke out on board and the ship became adrift.

The British embassy in Yemen reports on X that at least two people have been killed. The US State Department later confirmed this as well.

In addition, at least four people are said to have been seriously injured and three sailors are missing. There were a total of twenty crew members on board.

The Houthis claimed the attack in a televised statement. Yahya Saree, the Houthis’ military spokesman, said the attacked ship was believed to be American.

Since November, the Houthis have been firing rockets at ships near the Red Sea in a show of support for the Palestinians in the war between Hamas and Israel. No deaths have ever happened before. According to news agency Reuters there were also serious injuries for the first time. The rebels sank a ship for the first time on Saturday.
