Three people were seriously injured in a serious traffic accident at the intersection of Boomsesteenweg with the R11 in Wilrijk on Tuesday. The police assume that someone has run through the red.

A van with two men in it drove on the R11 towards Hoboken. When crossing the intersection, a station wagon suddenly appeared and was driving on the Boomsesteenweg towards Jan Van Rijswijcklaan. The driver of the van could no longer avoid a collision and drove into the side of the station wagon.
The latter was thrown away and ended up against a traffic light. The fire brigade had to come to the scene to free the two occupants. Both the man (69) and the woman (68) were seriously injured and taken to hospital. The woman is in serious condition.
The driver of the van was also injured. The fire brigade stayed on site to clean the track. The incident caused local traffic disruption, but the intersection was always open.
The police assumes that one of the two parties has run into the red, but makes no statements about who that was. “That remains to be seen,” says spokesman Wouter Bruyns.
