A total of three Indonesian representatives passed the semifinals 2023 Junior World Championships in Spokane, Washington, United States, on Saturday (7/10) early morning.
Of the five Indonesian representatives who competed, three of them managed to advance to the semifinals.
Indonesian junior men’s singles, Alwi Farhan, succeeded in making a surprise in the quarter-finals of the U-19 Badminton World Championship.
Alwi appeared impressive and managed to beat China’s representative, Wang Zi Jun, in a tight game in two straight games with a score of 21-19 and 21-18.
Another positive result was achieved by Chiara Marvella Handoyo in the women’s singles sector. Chiara defeated the first seed from Japan, Tomoka Miyazaki, in a three-game battle that ended with scores of 21-14, 18-21 and 22-20.
In the mixed doubles sector, the pair Jonathan Farrel Gosal/Priscila Venus Elsadai also successfully defeated the Japanese representatives, Kenta Matsukawa and Nao Yamakita, in two straight games with a score of 21-13 and 21-13.
Unfortunately, this positive result could not be followed by another mixed doubles, Adrian Pratama/Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu. Adrian/Felisha lost to Malaysian representatives, Low Han Chen and Chong Jie Yu, with a score of 18-21 and 16-21.
Meanwhile, in the men’s doubles sector, Muhammad Al Farizi and Nikolaus Joaquin lost against the Chinese pair, Ma Shang and Zhu Yi Jun, with a score of 21-15, 17-21 and 14-21.
With this result, Indonesia currently has three representatives who have successfully advanced to the semifinals of the 2023 WJC, namely Alwi Farhan, Chiara Marvella Handoyo, and the mixed doubles pair Jonathan Farrel Gosal/Priskila Venus Elsadai.
Next, Alwi Farhan will face India’s representative Ayush Shetty in the semifinals. Chiara Marvella Handoyo challenges Huang Lin Ran from China. Meanwhile, Jonathan Farrel Gosal/Priskila Venus Elsadai will face Liao Pin Yi/Zhang Jia Han, who also come from China.
