The migration crisis has marked the two years of the administration of the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, in the midst of a national political battle between democrats and republicans. It is estimated that between April 2022 and December 2023, NYC spent approximately $3.5 billion dollars in housing and services for more than 164,500 people who passed through the city’s admission center.

The situation has strained the city’s shelter system.. According to local government counts, the population of the shelter system went from less than 50,000 in July 2022 to around 120,000 in November.

In September, Mayor Adams declared that the massive arrival of immigrants will “destroy” the city. The situation has caused, in his own words, “Extremely painful” spending cuts that will affect millions of New Yorkers and hamper all city agencies by claiming the lack of resources from Joe Biden’s government.
