Three doctors from Assiut and Sohag governorates received praise after they were able to help a twenty-year-old girl give birth inside a train car on Wednesday.
Dr. Essam Nan Al-Najjar, a cardiovascular consultant at Assiut General Hospital, and one of the participants in the birth, said: I was on a trip on train No. (976 VIP), which departed from Cairo at eight in the evening, heading towards Aswan and only stops in the governorate capitals, and in At exactly one in the morning, we heard the screams of a girl accompanied by her husband. We discovered that she was pregnant and in a difficult birth. By coincidence, Dr. Islam Abu Shama, an obstetrics and gynecology specialist, and his wife, Dr. Suzan Alaa, a pediatrician from Sohag Governorate, and a fourth person, a paramedic, were present, and we began to follow up on the situation.
Nan added to “Masrawy”: Dr. Islam assured me that the condition is difficult and requires rapid delivery, and as we call it “four-finger,” that is, the cervix is very open, and it is necessary to give birth quickly. I examined her manually and found that her pulse was weak, so I spoke with the train’s captain from He decided to stop the train in Malawi, but he said it was difficult because the matter had not been arranged in advance, and he decided to stop it at Dayrut station in Assiut.
He continued: They asked to take the case to the nearest hospital, but we refused after Dr. Islam confirmed that the case was critical and would not bear being transferred to a hospital due to the possibility of bleeding. He decided to complete the birth on the train, and said that the case was virgin and an incision must be made in the uterus.
He added: The necessary work was done after we found “scissors” with one of the passengers, and the buffet workers brought hot water, and the birth took place while the train was moving, and we were then approaching the city of Assiut, and there the case was transferred after arranging with the ambulance facility to wait for us there.
Dr. Essam pointed out the difficulty of the situation: We took upon ourselves the responsibility and no one would have mercy on us if something bad happened to the situation, but Dr. Islam’s decision was correct, and God’s grace and help were merciful to the woman who found 3 doctors and a paramedic with her on the train, and in the end the obstetrician’s wife, a pediatrician, came forward. Do what is necessary for the child and check on her.
The doctor concluded his speech: The girl’s father decided, at the end of the trip and before getting out of the train car, to name his daughter “Shams” so that ululations could be heard in the train car, after a difficult hour after the woman gave birth without any medical capabilities.
