Three dead after an accident with a wrong-way driver on E19 in Machelen

A serious accident with two vehicles happened on the E19 in Machelen on Tuesday afternoon. This involved a wrong-way driver who tried to flee from the police. The three occupants of the getaway car were killed, the driver of the other vehicle was slightly injured.

The chase started when the local police of Zaventem was called up for a break-in attempt in Nossegem, near the Mechelsesteenweg. Witnesses reported three persons and a vehicle. Checking that vehicle’s number plate revealed it had been reported stolen. The police tried to stop the car, but it took off at high speed and drove onto the E19, but in the wrong direction.

At Machelen, the getaway car would have tried to leave the highway via the ramp, but there it came to a head-on collision with a van. The driver of the van sustained minor injuries, but the three occupants of the escape vehicle did not survive the blow.

One of the three deceased victims could now be identified as a 20-year-old man from Schaerbeek. No identity details are yet known for the other two. The Halle-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office has sent a traffic expert on site. The judicial laboratory and a law doctor are also present.
