Three days of national mourning in Guatemala over accident in Mexico | Abroad

Flags will be flown at half mast across the country for three days from Saturday. The accident in the Mexican state of Chiapas happened after a truck overturned, possibly due to the weight of the approximately 160 migrants in the trailer. Video footage showed dozens of bodies lying side by side, covered by white cloths.

After the accident, Mexico asked the United States to rethink and adjust its migration policy. Many people from Central America are still risking the perilous journey to the United States in the hope of a better life there. This is increasingly happening in trucks.

According to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the US should invest more in Central American countries, which is the only way to prevent people from making the perilous journey to the US.

“Such tragedies should move the world to do something about the underlying problem, despair,” Obrador said. “The migration crisis cannot be stopped by threatening punishment, but only by helping people by giving them job opportunities and a better life. People don’t leave their villages for pleasure, but out of necessity.”
