[China News Service]Wellington News: According to the New Zealand Institute of Geology and Nuclear Science, on the 5th local time, three consecutive strong earthquakes of magnitude 7 or higher occurred in the waters north of New Zealand’s North Island within 6 hours. The New Zealand National Emergency Management Agency issued a national tsunami warning, and there are currently no reports of casualties and property damage.
According to the New Zealand Institute of Geology and Nuclear Science, the first earthquake occurred at 2:27 on the 5th local time with a magnitude of 7.1 and a focal depth of about 90 kilometers. It was located about 95 kilometers northeast of New Zealand’s North Island. The earthquake was felt strongly in most areas of New Zealand’s North Island and Christchurch in the South Island. Since then, earthquakes of magnitude 7.4 and magnitude 8.0 occurred successively at 6:41 and 8:28 in the Kermadek Islands, about 1,000 kilometers away from the main island of New Zealand.
The magnitudes of the three earthquakes determined by the US Geological Survey Seismic Information Network were 7.3, 7.4 and 8.1 respectively.
After the first strong earthquake occurred, the New Zealand National Emergency Management Agency issued an early warning of the tsunami caused by the strong earthquake. At around 9 o’clock on the 5th local time, the tsunami warning was issued again, requiring residents of the eastern coast to move away from the coast to higher places or inland.
