Three concerts organized by Facebook in its metaverse go unnoticed

From December 26 to 31, Facebook hosted free concerts by Young Thug, Chainsmokers and David Guetta in its Horizon Worlds metaverse, but few spectators turned out… virtually.

Attending a virtual concert will be one of the possibilities of the Metaverse, these virtual universes which will allow to live a lot of experiences (it is Meta, the new name of the Facebook group, which says it). To show the potential of its Horizon Worlds metaverse, Meta has decided to organize 3 free virtual concerts from December 26 to 31. If David Guetta’s has totaled a million views, Young Thug’s only attracted 100,000 spectators and Chainsmokers’s was deleted. Sign that the fans were not there?

In the video of Young Thug’s 1h10 concert, we see the rapper singing on an island surrounded by lava. He is alone on stage, accompanied by a DJ and… a virtual caged spider.

The reasons for this lack of enthusiasm? Probably the fact that the concerts weren’t optimized for a virtual reality experience. David Guetta’s performance was just a 2D broadcast of his concert in Abu Dhabi. Young Thug and The Chainsmokers shows only offered a 180-degree view for Oculus virtual reality headset owners. Another probable reason, the fact that they took place during the holiday season, a time when everyone wanted to find their loved ones “in real life”.

Experiences much less successful therefore than the concert of Travis Scott in the Fortnite video game in April 2020. He had gathered 12 million players for a performance of 10 minutes. A battle seems to have been launched between large digital companies and video game publishers to find out who will offer the best experience in the metaverse.
