For example, if a colleague doesn’t immediately respond to an email, you might assume he’s ignoring your request, when in reality he might simply be busy. A practical example would be when we interpret someone’s silence as disinterest, when it could simply be that they are listening intently. NLP teaches us to put ourselves in other people’s shoes and avoid making assumptions.

Mistake 2: Generalizations

When we generalize, we tend to ignore individual differences and treat all people or situations as if they were the same. This can limit our ability to respond effectively to new challenges. For example, you may think that all your customers have the same needs, when in reality each customer is unique. A practical example would be when we assume that all our colleagues have the same level of knowledge on a topic, when in reality their expertise can vary greatly. NLP helps us recognize and appreciate individual differences.

Mistake 3: Distortions

Sometimes, we allow our emotions or beliefs to alter our perception of reality. This can lead to poor decisions and ineffective behavior. For example, you may allow a bad past experience to influence your perception of a new opportunity. A practical example would be when we let a single negative review overshadow all the other positive reviews we have received. NLP gives us the tools to manage our emotions and see things as they really are.
