The parents deny that they have locked up the children against their will and are appealing against the custodial placement, local radio reported. They are from “another part of the world” and are not fluent in Swedish, according to the lawyer. “They could not really understand the news here,” said counsel. “They continued to follow the news via the Internet from their old country,” where much stricter restrictions applied.

Unlike most other European countries, Sweden has not implemented a strict lockdown. In many cases, normal life could continue as usual. Schools for children under the age of 16 remained open.

The corona virus has claimed a relatively large number of lives in the Scandinavian country. With 575 deaths per million inhabitants, it is one of the most affected countries worldwide.
