NEW YORK – Three young children were found unconscious on the Brooklyn coast Monday morning and later died, while their mother, who was discovered barefoot on the boardwalk about two miles away, was interrogated, they authorities said.
According to the NYPD, a concerned family member called the police around 3:15 am after her mother was found drenched and in a disturbed state on the seafront near Brighton 6th Street, according to police.
The children, 3 months old and 7 year old boys and a 4 year old girl, were found in the sand on Brighton beach near West 35th Street shortly thereafter. Police say they had no outward signs of trauma.
All of them were taken to Coney Island Hospital, where they were eventually pronounced dead.
Police say they are questioning the mother. They are investigating whether the children were in the water before they were found ashore and are asking potential witnesses to come forward.
They say it’s unclear if mom was in the water too or got wet in another way. Police said at a press conference earlier Monday that they were not in contact with officers who arrived at the scene. They took her to the police station.
No other details were immediately available.
