▲ Suspect throwing a Chinese woman to the floor in Queens, New York City
In New York City, USA, three assaults against Asian women occurred in a day.
Local media reports such as ABC New York on the 19th local time showed that a man approached a 52-year-old Chinese woman who was waiting in line in front of a bakery in Flushing, Queens, New York City at around 2 pm on the 16th, and then threw a box and pushed the woman strongly. I knocked it down.
The New York Police (NYPD) said that the victim was taken to a hospital after hitting her head against an iron newsstand and fell to the floor, and stitched five stitches on her forehead.
Police arrested a suspect named Patrick Matteo the following day in Queens for assault and other charges, but the man was not charged with hate crimes.
The victim’s daughter Maggie Kayla Cheong said on social media, “He poured racial abuse and pushed her mother down the street. She is still shocked and grateful that she is alive.”
The incident was known across the country as actress Olivia Moon shared it on social media, and caused resentment.
Unfortunately, on the same day, a 71-year-old Asian woman was beaten in the face of someone on a subway in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, and a 68-year-old Asian woman was beaten in the back of a subway in Harlem, police said.
These incidents are also not being treated as racial hate crimes, according to the US media.
In an interview with ABC, Russell Jung, co-founder of the’Stop Hatred Against Asia-Pacific’ site, said in an interview with ABC, “The Corona 19 pandemic has licensed hatred,” and “Asian Americans are the target.”
According to the site, 2,808 cases of racial discrimination targeting Asian Americans were reported in the United States from March to December last year.
A total of 29 Asian hate crimes were reported to the NYPD last year, of which 24 were xenophobia incidents due to Corona 19.
