The UK Foreign Office Travel Council said Swedish authorities had successfully thwarted some of the planned attacks and made arrests.
“At this time, you must be vigilant. Terrorists are likely to try to carry out terrorist attacks in Sweden in places visited by foreigners in order to make them potential targets,” the report says.
Sweden’s national security adviser Henrik Landerholm also confirmed the increased threats to Sweden following the arson attacks.
Landerholm said the storming of the Swedish embassy in Iraq on July 19, the attempted attack on the Swedish embassy in Lebanon on August 9, and the August 1 shooting of a Swedish consular officer in Turkey contributed to such risks.
The US government also warned of possible terrorist attacks in Sweden in its travel advisory.
Burning of the Quran in Denmark and Sweden
In recent months there have been several protests in Denmark and Sweden in which the Koran has been burned or otherwise desecrated. This led to tension in the country’s relations with the Muslim world.
The Scandinavian countries deplored this but said they could not prevent it under constitutional laws protecting freedom of speech.
However, soon the governments of both countries announced that they were studying the possibility of legislative restrictions that would prevent such actions of the demonstrators.
