KIEV, KOMPAS.TV President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday (10/12/2021) said the opportunity to talk with Russia is now more open thanks to the United States (US).

Zelenskyy said the diplomatic efforts launched by the US helped reduce tensions after Moscow deployed troops on the Ukrainian border so that it was feared it would trigger a military attack.

“Thanks to the US,” Zelensky was quoted as saying in the 1+1 Ukrainian television interview broadcast on Friday (10/12/2021).

With the support of the US and Ukraine’s European allies, Zelenskyy did not rule out the possibility of direct talks between him and Putin. In fact, several times before, Zelenskyy had proposed such talks to the Russian leader, but had never been heeded.

“I see support for (opening) this path, from our European partners and the US,” Zelenskyy said.

Launch Associated Press On Saturday (11/12/2021), US President Joe Biden spoke with both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Washington apparently wants to take a direct role in diplomacy between Kiev and Moscow.

Biden proposed joining his European partners in negotiations with Russia. The negotiations are not only meant to resolve the conflict on the eastern border of Ukraine. But also to address Putin’s larger strategic objections to NATO’s plans to expand membership to the east.

Zelenskyy revealed the message he got from talks with Biden on Thursday (9/12/2021).

Russia assures the US and the rest of the world that they have no intention of continuing the escalation of our independent territories,” Zelenskyy said Friday.
