25-year-old Jonathan Vaka had an unpleasant encounter with the capital last weekend when he was the victim of what he believes was a professional watch heist.
He spent the weekend with his roommate and mother. On Saturday night they went out for a quiet dinner. When the meal was eaten, they followed Karl Johans’ gate, before the cohabiting couple went to meet a couple of friends. While the boy accompanied his mother to the hotel room, Vaka met what he describes as two “beautiful boys”.
– We got up and talked. They were going like me, and I’m not well known in Oslo, so I followed them, says the Haugal from Dagbladet.
The case was first discussed in The Haugesund newspaper.
– The threat of the knife
However, when they arrived at Kristparken in Hammersborg, he was deprived of the watch he wore on his wrist, he says.
The watch enthusiast had recently purchased a Rolex Datejust with a steel and white gold dial. He got it for a list price of around NOK 88,000, but claims that the price can be between NOK 130 and 160,000.
– I grabbed one and tried to fight for my property, but they had a knife and threatened to stab me, says Vaka, and adds:
– Then I walked away and stopped fighting.
Russia is mobilizing the homeless
The watch collector is well aware that such robberies are common in other large cities such as Rome and Paris. He feared what the outcome would be if he kept reacting.
– Never feared robbery
In shock, Vaka ran and screamed for help. He himself had no power on his cell phone, but managed to get in touch with a man who contacted the police.
– They said there was nothing else I could do, says the 25-year-old, who thinks it looks like a planned and calculated robbery.
Vaka wants to make others aware that such robberies can happen.
He admits the accident hit him.
– I thought a lot about my mother and the roommate who couldn’t get me. I never feared a robbery, but it happened. It ruined my sleep and my mood, but I’m thankful. It could have been worse. I’m glad they said they had a knife. She gave me a chance to escape, says Vaka.
– It could mean the end of his life
He has already been in contact with the insurance company and hopes that the financial situation can be resolved. Vaka also reported the incident to the police.
Despite the terrifying experience, Vaka will continue to collect watches.
– And use them?
– And of course use them. You can’t be afraid to use what you like, but maybe be more careful. That’s not all you have to go with all the time.
