Threatened Not Completed by 2024, Sumatran Toll Road Asks US for Help

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment General (ret.) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, offered investment for the completion of the Trans Sumatra toll road project to the United States. This project is targeted to be mostly completed by 2024.

“Trans Sumatra, the president gave directions to complete it. Some sections are already operating from Betung – Medan to Parapat. Then the one from Medan to Aceh yesterday when Antony Blinken (US Foreign Minister) came, if you really want to help, please help there,” said Luhut in his statement, Friday (12/24/2021).

Previously, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono also approached Turkey for Trans Sumatra projects as well as several other infrastructures.

The toll road projects in Trans Sumatra are Jambi – Rengat and Rengat – Pekanbaru (Pekanbaru – Siak) with a total length of 282.7 km, sections III and IV of the State Capital Access toll road project with a total length of 33.7 km. As well as the IKN zone 1 A IKN housing sector PPP project for 11,268 residential units (staging year 2021 to 2024.

“We are looking forward to Turkey’s participation in the implementation of development programs in Indonesia,” Basuki said in a statement, Monday (12/13/2021).

The PUPR Ministry itself has changed the target for the completion of the Trans Sumatra Toll Road.

In the RPJMN until 2024, it should have been able to connect from Lampung to Aceh, but the plan changed due to land acquisition problems. So that the Trans Sumatra toll road is only connected to Pekanbaru in 2024.

“With limited land, the initial plan for the RPJMN target was to be able to connect from Aceh to Lampung until the end of 2024, but for now we will build it in stages, meaning that until 2024 we will try to connect from Betung to Pekanbaru,” said the Director of Highways at the Directorate General of Highways at the Ministry of PUPR, Budi Harimawan, to CNBC Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the construction of toll roads in the northern part of Binjai – Aceh and Dumai – Kisaran will be proposed in the second phase. This means, according to Budi, due to limited land, it will only be done after 2024.
