War veterans Ukraine in Poland reportedly preparing to enlist to fight again amid threat of invasion Russia.
Reuters interviewed a number of Ukrainian war veterans in the city of Warsaw who had worked in the country regarding the tensions between their country and Ukraine.
Ukrainian veterans such as Sergiy Sklarenko said he would not think twice about leaving his job in Poland to join his compatriots fighting Russia again.
“I will say to my boss. ‘Sorry boss, I want to go home to defend my country. You can see what happened there’,” Sklarenko told Reuters.
“My friends here (Warsaw) and other countries are the same. They will definitely come back to join the military unit and say they are ready,” the 37-year-old added.
The same thing was said by Dmytro Dovzhenko in Warsaw. The 40-year-old Ukrainian war veteran is ready to fight again to repulse the Russian troops.
“If there is a war, we will return to military units. According to military law, I have 24 hours and only need that time. In 24 hours, I will return to the (Ukraine) military,” said Dovzhenko.
Dovzhenko also recounted the time when he fought against Russia in 2014 during the conflict over Crime. The war was completely unbalanced in the midst of Ukraine’s military limitations.
“At that time we had no equipment. I only wore a 20-year-old Bundeswehr (German army) uniform. I only got a Kalashnikov rifle (AK-47) from our country. That’s all.”
“In 2015 we got better uniforms. Now we have modern weapons and medicine. We have everything you need. Most importantly we have experienced people,” said Dovzhenko.
He stressed that the Ukrainians are not at all afraid to face Russian forces.
