“Threat to global peace” North Korean troops in Russia: Von der Leyen

Brussels, Belgium. The deployment of North Korean soldiers on Russian territory constitutes a “threat to global peace,” said the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on Monday.

“North Korean soldiers are deployed to support Russia‘s war of aggression (in Ukraine). It is a serious escalation in this war and a threat to global peace,” Von der Leyen noted on the X social network.

NATO chief confirms presence of North Korean troops in Russian region

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed this Monday the sending of North Korean troops to Russia and the deployment of several of its military units in the Kursk region.

“The growing military cooperation between Russia and North Korea is a threat to both Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic security,” Rutte told reporters after NATO officials and diplomats received a briefing from a South Korean delegation. .

Ukrainian forces carried out a major raid on Kursk in August and remain in the region.

Rutte said the North Korean deployment represents “a significant escalation” of Pyongyang’s involvement in “Russia’s illegal war” in Ukraine, a violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions and a “dangerous expansion” of the war.

He also indicated that the deployment of North Korean troops is a sign of the “growing desperation” of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“More than 600,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded in Putin’s war, which is incapable of maintaining its assault on Ukraine without foreign support,” Rutte said.

The Kremlin had branded reports of a North Korean troop deployment as “fake news.” However, Putin did not deny the presence of these troops in Russia on Thursday and said that it is Moscow’s business how to implement the association treaty with Pyongyang.

A North Korean representative to the United Nations in New York called the reports “unfounded rumors.”
