Threat to Churchill, Polar Bear Capital of the World, as Sea Ice Shifts

As of August 16 2023, conservation officers from the Polar Bear Warning Program (PBAP) have received 76 phone calls from residents regarding the presence of polar bears and caught 3 of these dangerous predators. “There are so many polar bears in and around the town of Churchill. It’s going to be a very busy bear season,” Chantal Maclean, Manitoba conservation officer at PBAR, told CBC News quoted SINDOnews from the Live Science page, Thursday (24/8/2023).

According to Manitoba Government Statistics, each year officers receive about 250 calls from residents and arrest about 50 bears. The record for catching the most bears occurred in 2003 with 176 individuals.

Two people in Churchill were killed by polar bears, one in 1968 and another in 1983. The last polar bear attack was in 2013, when two people were seriously injured but survived.

Polar bears spend the winter hunting for seals on the frozen surface of Hudson Bay. When the ice melts in spring, bears head inland to mate and find alternative food sources.

In autumn, the bears return to the sea. Typically, about half of the approximately 600 bears that live along the western shoreline of Hudson Bay pass through Manitoba and most stop in Churchill for food. The remainder passes through Ontario and Nunavut.
