Threads: Meta’s New Short Messaging App Now Available in Germany – What You Need to Know

Meta’s short messaging app Threads was released back in July. It was intended to be an alternative to Twitter and benefited from Elon Musk’s takeover of the network and its renaming to X. However, the service was initially not available for download in Germany and other EU countries due to regulatory uncertainties. Since December 14th There are now threads in Germany too. We’ll tell you what you need to know about the network.

Mostly short, text-heavy posts (here there are max. 500 characters) are lined up one after the other, occasionally there is an image or a video. People from all over the world can react to and interact with the posts. This reminds you of Twitter or X? No wonder, since Meta’s new network should enter the market as competition. Released in July in the USA and around a hundred other countries, the new app immediately set a record: 10 million users had threads in the first 24 hours, 100 million after just five days. In doing so, the app shattered the record set by ChatGPT not long before. After the enthusiasm waned shortly afterwards as the app became a contact point for spammers, it is now seeing steady growth again. In our article, we will tell you which social media trends, in addition to threads, await users and marketers in 2024.

Threads are immediately popular in Germany

With its availability for users in Germany and other EU countries, a rush for the new app began here too. The reason why the app is now also accessible in the EU could be that you no longer need a profile to enter. Without a profile, you cannot interact with posts or create posts yourself, but you can view all posts from other users. This was also the case with Twitter / X before. Users who would like to create an account can do so easily via their Instagram profile.

Threads & Instagram

Instagram and Threads are closely linked as Meta products. In fact, it is currently not possible to create a Threads account without having an Instagram profile. If you transfer the settings from Instagram to the new app, the same friends and creators will be suggested to you to follow. In addition, threaded posts can be shared on Instagram and the transition from one app to the other is also possible directly from the application.

But are the two networks actually relevant for your company and its target group? Our generational comparison of usage behavior as well as our article about the most popular platforms for marketing will show you.

Is Threads the new Twitter?

Since X has been struggling with its user numbers since it was taken over by Elon Musk and changed its name, Threads probably went on the market at exactly the right time. Even before its publication in the EU, the network was able to record a more consistent increase in users than X. However, it of course still has a lot of existing users from the time before the change. It remains to be seen whether the hype that has just broken out in the EU will die down again after a short time, or whether Threads can establish itself as a better alternative. Only then can we say with certainty which app users prefer in the long term.
