Threads are growing again due to reported increase in user base. However, the company is not resting on its laurels and continues to push new features such as the DM system. Today, both Mark Zuckerberg and Adam Mosser announced that Threads is getting a Top Topics feature.
Not long ago, Threads announced that it surpassed 100 million uses again. The company did this within days of launching in July 2023, but that was just the initial rush of users. After that, its user base dwindled and dwindled to about half of that. However, over the course of several months, Threads introduced more useful features, and it very slowly made its way back to the top. Now, the company is still working on new features in hopes of usurping X.
Threads tests the current topics feature
If you use Threads and want to know what people are talking about, this could be the future for you. Mark Zuckerberg made a short and sweet post on Threads saying that the company is doing a little testing. You will see what topics are hot in the US that day.
Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, also posted about this, but he went a little deeper. Basically, you’ll see topics that are “determined by (Meta) AI systems based on what people are currently engaging with in Threads.” So whatever people are talking about the most, you will see it.
It will be similar to the one available on X in that you access it through the search function. When you tap the search button, you’ll see a section called Today’s Topics above the search results. You will then see a list of at least five topics that are trending at that time. Topics will also be scattered throughout the For You feed.
This feature is quite limited at the moment as it is still brand new. First, it only covers topics that are currently hot in the US. Also, this is a very limited test, so it’s unlikely you’ll see it on day one. We haven’t seen the future in Android titles and we’re running the latest beta version.
It’s still worth it, though. Make sure your app is fully up to date and see if you can see the hot topics. If not, then you just have to wait for the test to expand.
