Elon Musk’s entry into the world of social networks has definitely diluted the market for these platforms. Some time ago, the Mastodon application from independent creators became popular. Now comes Threads, a microblogging social platform similar to Twitter, which was worked on by the company Meta, which also operates Facebook and Instagram. How does Threads work and what makes it special?

Threads is an Internet social network with its own application for iOS and Android, designed by the American company Meta. The network was launched on July 5 in 100 countries around the world. This includes, for example, Great Britain, of course the USA, or China. However, the countries of the European Union do not yet officially support Threads due to unclear conditions for the protection of user privacy.

At its core, Threads works just like Twitter, or Mastodon, which we recently reported on in an article about alternatives to Twitter. The main page, a kind of feed with posts, previously the term “wall” was used, is displayed vertically and contains both text and images, videos and links.
The advantage is the connection with Instagram, the second most popular social network of the Meta holding. The kinship is evident from the name itself: Threads, an Instagram app. You can easily move your Instagram profile to “Threads”, change your bio and picture, but your name will remain. You will also retain the “verified” plaque if it has been assigned to you in the past.
Similarities to Twitter
You can also create a post, a kind of thread, yourself. A text post can be up to 500 characters long, videos a maximum of 5 minutes. Individual threads of other users can then be liked, commented on, shared or directly published on Instagram as a post or story. However, you can’t sort topics yet, and the “#” tags don’t work either.
However, Twitter can also do all of the above, a kind of spiritual model of Threads and the main competition in one. The fact is that Threads does not bring any game-changing features compared to Twitter. It even looks very similar in many ways (profile screen, main post wall), the basic actions are the same. In contrast to Twitter, which started as a white social network, Threads only offers a black background.
How to download Threads app?
At this point, the reciprocity between Threads and Instagram is really very key, and you can’t set up a microblogging account without a picture network profile. As soon as you open the new app, you’ll be prompted to enter your Instagram credentials. Then the application will offer you to transfer data from Instagram and also transfer the list of followers – on the other hand, unfortunately, you have to add followers again.
By the way, if you decide to cancel your Threads account, you can’t do it on your own, but you have to delete your Instagram account as well. It is possible that the Meta will change this rule in the future, but at the time of writing it has not indeed it is.

At the time of writing, the availability of the application is bleak. Threads is available in 100 countries around the world, including, of course, the USA, Great Britain, Australia, Canada and the like. However, at its beginning, at the end of July, it is not available in any country belonging to the European Union (EU).

The law is to blame Digital Markets Act, which regulates the market of digital markets and simplicity, for example, prohibits a company from sharing users’ data from one social network to another without their permission, even if it manages both, as in the case of Meta. The Threads network was officially launched on July 5, 2023, but availability in EU countries is not in sight.
Installation on iPhone and Android
Nevertheless, there is a solution to install Threads in the Czech Republic as well. On the iPhone, you either have to switch the system and also the App Store to a supported region, ideally the US or the UK. The easiest solution at all is to create a brand new Apple ID with the region set to the US (no VPN or US card required). On Android, just download the installation .apk file, for example from the web APKmirror.com.

In general, there is quite a lot of dissatisfaction with the direction in which the social network Twitter is headed under the leadership of Elon Musk.
