Thrace Economic Zone: Leading the Way in Renewable Energy and High-Tech Investments

The Thrace Economic Zone has started work on the production of biomethane and hydrogen to power the production. Many high-tech foreign companies work and invest in the zone, and an impressive investment is expected, commented Eng. Plamen Panchev, executive director of the Trakia Economic Zone, as quoted by Bloomberg TV Bulgaria.

Thrace Economic Zone is the first carbon neutral industrial zone in Europe. The German economic media Handelsblatt notes on the front page that the Thrace Economic Zone succeeds in attracting German companies and provides a platform for the good representation of German companies in our country. And the Berlin daily Tagesspiegel compares Plovdiv with “the new Beijing”, Panchev said.

5 years ago the zone adopted its carbon neutrality strategy. Then they are not confident that renewable and clean energy production will be the leading projects in the zone, but at the moment the good results are a fact, he said. The clean and renewable energy sector is attracting a large number of investors to the area, he added.

A number of new projects are being developed in the zone, one of which is for the production of “e-bikes” (electric bicycles) by a Bulgarian company. The production of vehicles powered by renewable sources is strongly advocated in the region.

One of Schneider Electric’s smartest factories is located in the zone, Panchev said. They are continuing with a new high-tech project, the information about which is confidential, he added. But it revealed that the size of the investment is quite impressive.

He explained that these are not just funds invested in a new plant, but new technologies and highly qualified jobs. Regarding the investments in the sector, Panchev said that their size should be “considered” that this is a new production and will require qualified labor.

Business is increasingly active and works better with Bulgarian higher education institutions. If 10 years ago we found that this connection (between business and educational institutions) was very weak or almost non-existent, now we have a completely different situation these relationships.”

The work must continue in cooperation with the state until vocational education becomes a priority and yes for the state, there is no way to provide the necessary personnel for the industry. Panchev expects good cooperation with all institutions at the central and local level.

The industry offers good pay to those who want qualified personnel, it should present itself as a desirable destination for career development in the eyes of children who choose a career path and their parents, explained the guest. He added that we have a young generation that contributes to the development of the industry.

Companies in the zone want to use renewable energy at good market prices. Not a few investors are already “looking” at hydrogen, said Panchev. That is why the economic zone has completed the first technical projects for the production of biomethane and hydrogen in partnership with Citygas. This is the trump card they will rely on to attract investments and develop the zone.
