According to Israeli Minister of Environmental Protection Tamar Zandberg, it is “the worst wildlife disaster in Israel’s history”. The exact extent of the damage is not yet fully clear.

In the Hula Valley, where water is abundant, tens of thousands of migratory birds pass each winter on their way to and from Africa. But the bird flu now cost the lives of many animals. The virus may have been spread by a truck driver who provides poultry in the region with food. Chicken farmers have already had to slaughter 100,000 animals in the area around Margaliot, along the border with Lebanon, which is why there are now also fears of a shortage of eggs.

A pelican with bird flu has also been reported in the Hefer Valley, in central Israel. In the Beet She’an Valley, the cadavers of dead animals are examined for the presence of the virus.
