The municipalities in Thuringia imposed numerous fines between March and December last year for violating the Corona requirements. A survey of ten districts and urban districts revealed that fines of around 380,000 euros were imposed for more than 5,000 violations.

In most cases, the contact restrictions have been violated. But also the night curfew, quarantine breakers and the violation of alcohol in public places occupied the regulatory authorities. Many violations were registered, especially in the state capital.

Middle and West Thuringia
Since the beginning of the first lockdown and the enactment of the first corona rules, in Erfurt 1,556 violations registered. As a result, the city received fines of around 60,000 euros. Most of the time, the public order office had to impose fines because the mouth and nose protection was not worn or not worn properly. In other cases, the Erfurters did not adhere to the contact restrictions or were still on the road after 10 p.m. despite the nightly curfew. Every now and then, however, the drinking of alcohol in public had to be stopped.

In Weimar 457 fines have been issued from March to December 2020 so far. According to the municipality, this resulted in fines amounting to 75,750 euros in the city treasury. But the city didn’t just benefit from the fines. In 81 cases, fines were converted into working hours. Fines were imposed nine out of ten for people failing to adhere to the contact restrictions in force.

In the neighboring Weimar Country a total of 158 reports of violations were recorded. Fines and warnings have been issued in every second case. In the remaining cases, according to the district office, the procedures have not yet been concluded. The revenue from the fines amounted to 12,872.50 euros. The most frequent violations in Weimarer Land were with the applicable contact restrictions. But the regulatory office also had to deal with quarantine breakers and those returning from travel who did not adhere to the rules.

Im Ilm district the law enforcement officers had to intervene mainly because of the lack of mouth and nose covering. A total of 272 times, applicable corona rules were violated in the district. Warning and fines were imposed in the amount of 24,325 euros.

South Thuringia
Im Sonneberg district So far, around 370 proceedings have been initiated for violations of the Corona requirements and fines of around 55,000 euros have been imposed. According to the District Office, however, fines were only issued in the cases up to October. All proceedings from October are currently still in the hearing. The majority of the violations concerned contact restrictions and violations of the night curfew.

In Meiningen 585 violations of the Corona rules were registered and fines of 36,810 euros were imposed. According to the District Office, the three most frequent violations were staying with more people than the rules allow at the time, the lack of mouth and nose protection and the non-compliance with the prescribed minimum distance of 1.50 meters.

East Thuringia
In the urban area Gera From March to December last year, 425 violations of the Corona requirements were found. As the city administration announced, fines of over 25,000 euros were imposed. Many people had met privately, despite the contact restrictions, or had not worn a mouth and nose covering. According to the city administration, there was no evaluation of the most frequent violations. In Jena, the number of registered violations is 175, which were punished with a 25,000 euro fine.

Northern Thuringia
Im Nordhausen district The fines for violations of the Corona rules totaled 26,800 euros. The 243 violations mainly concerned violations of the applicable contact restrictions. But alcohol in public places also played a not insignificant role with 42 violations.

The Unstrut-Hainich district recorded a total of 527 proceedings from March to December 2020. So far, fines amounting to 37,985 euros have been imposed. The group did not record which corona requirements people violated.
