More than 5,000 rockets were fired from Gaza Strip the Israel on Saturday (7/10). This was conveyed by the armed wing Hamasstating that they had started “Operation Al-Aqsa”.
“We are determined to end all the crimes of the (Israeli) occupation, their time for running amok without being held accountable is over,” the group said, quoted by the news agency AFPSaturday (7/10/2023).
“We declared Operation Al-Aqsa and we fired, in the first attack in 20 minutes, more than 5,000 rockets,” he added.
An AFP journalist in Gaza reported sirens warning of an attack wailing in Israel.
Rocket fire was launched from several locations in Gaza starting at 06:30 local time, AFP journalists reported.
The Israeli military sounded sirens across the southern and central regions of the country for more than an hour, and called on the public to stay near bomb shelters.
The military also said a number of militants had infiltrated Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip, without providing further information.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the prime minister would soon hold a meeting with security chiefs regarding the attack.
Israel has imposed a crippling blockade on Gaza since 2007, after the Hamas group took power.
Since then, Hamas and Israel have engaged in several devastating wars.
