According to chef Zdeněk Pohlreich, another 10 to 20 percent of restaurants and businesses may go bankrupt this winter. He spoke about this and other problems on Thursday in the program Our Czechia in an interview with economist Lukáš Kovanda.
Since last week, restaurants have been required to check infectivity. Some restaurateurs then admitted that the number of customers decreased slightly. Another of them can lay down this measure. But Zdeněk Pohlreich does not have this experience. According to him, customers are disciplined.
“Old people take it for granted. In time, people will get used to how they get used to everything,” the chef thinks. According to him, this is also due to Czech history. “I think a little of that discomfort is worth the fact that businesses can be open and it’s not as drastic as last year,” added Pohlreich.
According to Dotykačka, which records data for about a quarter of gastronomic establishments in the Czech Republic, there is a quarter of a drop in the first week of November. According to Kovanda, this is also explained by the worsening weather. “There are more factors, the gardens are over and the weather is worse. But I think people will get used to it,” says Pohlreich.
“I think this winter will decide. I hope the percentage of restaurants that can’t handle it isn’t high. But if it was 10 to 20 percent, I wouldn’t be surprised,” said Pohlreich. “These are thousands of companies in the Czech Republic, billions in investment, it’s quite a big problem, I think,” he added.
According to him, the new government will not help the companies either. “I can’t imagine re-launching a program that should save restaurants or make their lives easier. I’m not counting on anything like that,” the chef said.
