Thousands of protesters in anti-government protests in Cuba after several days of blackouts

MADRID, 18 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Thousands of people demonstrated this Sunday in the streets of several cities in Cuba against the Government of Miguel Díaz-Canel after several days of blackouts and delays in the distribution of basic foods.

Those attending the marches have asked for “current and food”, “freedom”, “homeland and life” and have denounced being hungry. After the images of the marches, the Government has restricted communications and has cut off the island’s Internet signal, reports the Cuban news portal 14ymedio.

Díaz-Canel has reacted through his social networks to point out that “several people have expressed their dissatisfaction with the situation of the electrical service and the distribution of food”, a context that “the enemies of the revolution are trying to take advantage of, for destabilizing purposes.” ».

For its part, the United States Embassy in Cuba has “urged the Cuban Government to respect the Human Rights of the protesters and address the legitimate needs of the Cuban people.” “We are aware of reports of peaceful protests in Santiago, Bayamo, Granma and other places in Cuba, with citizens protesting the lack of food and electricity,” he indicated.

Given this statement, the Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, has criticized the “direct and cruel responsibility of the United States in the acute economic situation that weighs on the well-being of the Cuban people.”

«The US Government, especially its Embassy in Cuba, must refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of the country and inciting social disorder. “They seek suffocation with the genocidal blockade and, based on the daily shortcomings and difficulties that they impose on us, they articulate their other war from the platforms that they dominate and take advantage of,” he stressed.
