The protesters opposed the decision of the Constitutional Court of the Republic on the reform of the judicial system.

In Poland, thousands of people on the evening of Sunday, October 10, protested against the controversial decision of the Constitutional Court on the priority of the Polish constitution over the legislation of the European Union. In Warsaw, demonstrators gathered at Castle Square. “We stay!”, “We are Europe!” they chanted, waving the flags of Poland and the European Union. In addition, protest actions took place in Gdansk, Poznan, Szczecin, Krakow and a number of other cities.

A few days earlier, the Constitutional Court of Poland issued a verdict on the priority of Polish legislation over the legislation of the European Union, considering certain provisions of EU legislation to be contrary to the basic law of the country. This decision is fueling a conflict between the European Commission and Warsaw in the context of the reform of the Polish judicial system.

Former Prime Minister Tusk accused the ruling party of wanting to withdraw Poland from the EU

Former President of the EU Council, former Prime Minister of Poland and leader of the Polish opposition Donald Tusk called for protests. “We have to save Poland, no one will do it for us. We will meet at 18:00 on the Castle Square in Warsaw,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

Tusk blames the ruling party Law and justice, adhering to a national-conservative ideological orientation, in the desire withdraw the country from the EU… “Poland’s place is in Europe! We will win because there are more of us!” – said Tusk, speaking to the participants of the demonstration in Warsaw.

The Polish government has been engaged in judicial reform for several years. The opposition accuses it of putting pressure on judges and attacking the independence of the judiciary. The European Commission has already filed several lawsuits with the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg to protect the rights of Polish judges and the principle of the independence of the judiciary in Poland.
