Thousands of Peruvians protest against impeachment of President Vizcarra

In many cities in Peru, people have taken to the streets to protest the impeachment of the popular president Vizcarra. The demonstrations were generally quiet, but clashes between protesters and the police in some places. Eleven people would have been injured, including a number of journalists.

Non-party President Martin Vizcarra was impeached by parliament on Monday after being accused of taking bribes. That would have happened when he was still governor. He himself contradicts the charges.

Since the deposition of Vizcarra, there has been turmoil in the country, which has been in the grip of political corruption scandals for years. Vizcarra had only been in office since 2018, when President Kuczynski stepped down on suspicions of corruption.

There will be new elections in Peru next year. Vizcarra has already announced that it will not stand for election. Pending further investigations into possible corruption, he has been banned from leaving the country for the next 18 months.
