Thousands of People Want to Adopt Aya, Baby Born in the Ruins of the Turkey Earthquake

Jakarta

Thousands of people offered to adopt a newborn baby girl under the rubble of a house in northwestern Syria, following a strong earthquake in Turkey on Monday (6/2/2023).

When found, baby Aya, which means miracle in Arabic, was still attached to her mother’s umbilical cord.

His entire family, including his parents and four siblings, died after a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit much of Turkey and Syria, including the rebel-held town of Jindayris where he was found.

“I hope someone knows how to reach the child. I am ready to adopt him and take care of him until the last minute of my life,” tweeted Ms Paulina Queralt, a Lebanese singer living in France.

Baby Aya is currently in hospital in the Syrian city of Afrin after she arrived “cold and barely breathing”, pediatrician Hani Maarouf said.

Currently, Aya’s condition is stable.

Hospital manager Khalid Attiah said he had received dozens of calls from people around the world wishing to adopt the baby.

“I will not allow anyone to adopt him now. Until his distant family returns, I will treat him like one of my own,” he said.

For now, Dr Khalid’s wife is nursing the baby, along with their own daughter, who is four months older than Aya.
