The pandemic and municipal elections were not enough to keep Brazilians off the beach.

Beach, sun and temperatures around 36ºC in Rio de Janeiro. This scenario would be perfect if Brazil was not experiencing, like the rest of the world, a pandemic caused by Covid-19. But the truth is that this was not enough to keep Brazilians off the main beaches of this city on Sunday, November 29th.
The beaches of Copacabana, Leblon and Ipanema were filled with thousands of people, which even caused gigantic traffic queues on the main access roads. And all of this on the day that the municipal elections in Rio de Janeiro were taking place.
Although the easing of measures to combat Covid-19 has already started in Brazil and it is allowed to remain on the beach, there was not supposed to be such a large concentration of people, especially without the recommended social distance and protective masks.
This Sunday’s official figures include 22 deaths and 556 cases of Covid-19 in the state of Rio de Janeiro alone.
