The Brazilian government sent emergency services, planes and equipment on Saturday to help those trapped by the water in the state of Bahia. According to figures from Friday evening, more than 11,000 people had to be rescued, 4,000 of whom spent Christmas Eve in government accommodations.
The authorities are “fully mobilized and are taking all measures to provide the victims of the heavy rains that hit Bahia at Christmas with the necessary support,” said the state governor, Rui Costa, in a video message. According to the state government, some roads were blocked by water masses, landslides or rockfalls. Cities in southern Bahia were particularly hard hit. Seventeen people have been killed in heavy rains in the state since November.
