Thousands of people fooled by the crowd at Schiphol: “Extremely annoying”

To cope with the crowds, the airport called on airlines to cancel flights today, a spokesperson said.

Long files

Due to the tight occupancy of the security services, there were still long lines in front of the departure halls today. Waiting times have increased from two to three hours. According to Schiphol, the appeal is addressed to all airlines to contribute as much as possible to the reduction of crowds.

It is not yet known exactly how many flights have been canceled, according to the spokesperson, as discussions are still ongoing. “We try to limit the number of canceled flights as much as possible.”

However, two flights were canceled at Transavia and some flights were also canceled at KLM. Corendon and TUI had previously indicated that they would not cancel any flights.

Ajax

EasyJet’s flights are going as planned, a spokesperson said. This also includes two flights to Liverpool. Ajax will play Liverpool FC in the Champions League tomorrow, which means fans of the Amsterdam club are also on the run to the English city.

The FNV union had said that due to the abolition of the summer allowance, more Schiphol security officers had started looking for work elsewhere. As a result, there were security shortcomings, which resulted in long queues of waiting passengers.

We’ll talk again tomorrow

Tomorrow FNV will again discuss the problems of staff shortages with Schiphol. FNV campaign manager Joost van Doesburg said the basic principle is that people can enjoy working at the airport again. According to him, the airport can turn two buttons for this: more security guards or fewer flights.

The Schiphol spokesman said it was still too early to talk about a possible new surcharge for security guards. “But we’re keeping our finger on the wrist and we’re seeing what we can do.”
