Hundreds of pumpkins were taken this Saturday in the popular park Governors Island in New York in the return of the party in which adults and children give free rein to their imagination by painting in multiple colors, with hearts, cats or smiles, this great protagonist of the autumn season, among many other drawings, a deeply rooted event in American culture.
The green areas and sidewalks of the park were full of pumpkins of various sizes including thousands of people who enjoyed a warm autumn day were able to choose the ones they prefer, with a small contribution to the conservation of the island, to paint or take home.

The children, who had more fun, ran from place to place among pumpkins, trees and fallen leaves as autumn arrived, whento which the pumpkin is everywhere, from the decoration of homes and businesses, to prepare dishes, desserts or drinks such as coffee, which various food chains offer their customers.
THE STORY BEHIND
The pumpkin is also a key element in the celebration of Halloween or the day of the witches in which the best is chosen to carve, after having hollowed it out, and transform it into a popular and terrifying Jack-O’-Lantern (Jack’s Lantern) a character came to this country from an Irish legend. Several children attended this Saturday with their costumes, looking forward to Halloween, among them dressed as a blue dog, pumpkins, sleeping beauty, like the princesses of Disney or some superhero.
Five thousand pumpkins were brought from Pennsylvania to Governors Island’s Nolan Park (south of Manhattan), which this Saturday also offered the public – who queued to catch the ferry to this place – music, theater and games for children.
“It’s a nice, calm and peaceful environment, very close to the city and not many people know it. Last year we came just to go around the island “, said Elena, who lives in Manhattan and participated for the first time in the festival, in its sixth edition, accompanied by her three-year-old son Noah, who was enjoyed taking a bath leaf.

BACK AFTER THE PANDEMIC
This is the first pumpkin festival since the pandemic and has attracted thousands of people of all ages and ethnic groups, including the Hernandez family, consisting of Britney, her husband. José and his son Julien, 5 years old. “We often come to the island, even in summer it is very beautiful”, commented Britney as her son enjoyed painting a pumpkin of many colors.

The remaining pumpkins will be donated to local organizations that fight hunger, or they will be turned into fertilizer for the island.
