Thousands of Penis Fish Washed Up on Coast of Argentina: A Rare Phenomenon Causes Uproar among Local Fishermen

Thousands of caupo urechis or better known as penis fish measuring about 25 cm washed up on the coast of Argentina. Suddenly the local fishermen were in an uproar.

Quoted from the Daily Mail, the penis fish line the Multillar beach, north of the Rio Grande. The creatures washed up on the beach after a heavy storm last Monday afternoon.

After finding the news, local fishermen immediately flocked to the beach. They collect penisfish because they are considered excellent bait, especially when fishing for seabass.

Thousands of penis fish had previously washed up on a beach in California in 2019. Like in Argentina, this rare phenomenon immediately caused a stir among local residents.

According to scientists, the stranding of thousands of penis fish was caused more by the weather. These creatures like to bury themselves in the sand, but storms and big waves in the ocean can easily drag them ashore.

Urechis caupo is actually a species of sea spoon worm that spends most of its life burrowing in the soft sediments of the ocean floor. To survive, these animals eat plankton, bacteria, and other small particles that fall into their bodies that have a slime trap.

A penis fish can live under the sand for up to 25 years. But fossil evidence has identified the creature as having existed for 300 million years.

This species has gained particular fame in Asia where they are eaten raw for their medicinal benefits due to their high concentration of amino acids.

They are generally sold alive in markets where customers can select specifically what they want. The taste is described as mild and offers a texture similar to clams.

While it is customary in most Asian countries to eat sea worms raw, some areas in China prefer to dry sea worms so they can be stored longer. The penis fish is then rehydrated when it wants to eat before being fried.

They are generally caught in the shallow waters of the China Sea, but are also found in underwater sand tunnels around the world.

The Japanese also consider fish a delicacy. Penis fish is made into sashimi and eaten with soy sauce and vinegar.
