Thousands of NYC students return to classes in person starting Monday – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – Thousands of students who were taking remote classes in New York City will return tomorrow, Monday, October 26, to classes in person.

This is because 128 schools located in the yellow zones, which include neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens, will reopen their doors as of this date.

Schools in these locations are required to randomly test students and staff for COVID-19 weekly. A total of 441 schools are now in the yellow zones of New York City; 16 that had been closed despite being in yellow zones will also reopen Monday, the city said.

Forty-five campuses remain in the red zones and must remain closed until Cuomo re-evaluates progress in the next week.

The change is due to the fact that these areas, which had reported a high rate of COVID-19 infections about three weeks ago, managed to reduce the number of new cases of coronavirus.

Schools that had been in the red or orange zones had had to switch to remote classes after the governor unveiled his strategy in critical parts of the city in response to rising positivity rates in certain neighborhoods. Non-essential businesses in the red zone also had to close; but they reopened on Thursday.
