Washington –
The four-wheeled manufacturer from Japan, Honda, is said to be under investigation by the United States Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Because there are thousands of complaints about the steering system.
As posted on the NHTSA website, several consumers complained of sticky steering problems. There are around 1,324 similar complaints which have caused 13 accidents and 3 injuries to motorists. These complaints have emerged in the last two years from owners of vehicles such as the Honda Civic, Honda CR-V, and Acura Integra, which usually have relatively short mileage.
Quoted Autoevolution, the average driver is concerned about the steering wheel suddenly getting stuck in position. For example, complaint number 11556368 describes the steering wheel of a 2022 Honda Civic locking up and becoming very loud when traveling at 70 miles per hour (113 kilometers per hour). The owner has to turn the steering wheel hard to prevent the steering wheel from locking.
Not only that, another driver with complaint number 11464979 reported that his car wheel jerked when trying to make a minor correction. He also noticed a strange sound coming from the electronic power steering system.
Although there are still several months to go before a verdict is handed down, NHTSA believes that the process of annealing (heat treating) and conditioning the car’s worm gear components may be the main cause of this incident.
An engineer named Stefanie Oldenburg also suspected there was a problem with the component annealing and conditioning process. This error causes internal stress in the worm gear. As a result, at the beginning of vehicle use, the worm gear can change shape. This explains how the worm gear can then seize resulting in increased steering effort. NHTSA also highlighted the problem of inconsistent grease in the steering gear.
Honda Motor America then responded to this issue by releasing a service bulletin to replace the gearbox assembly on several series of Honda Civic cars.
However, it is estimated that around 532,535 cars sold under the Honda and Acura brands for the 2022 – 2023 model year will be recalled because of this problem.
