Several thousand German Easter tourists have traveled to the Spanish holiday island of Mallorca this weekend, despite the German government asking them to stay home.

On Saturday, 60 planes from Germany landed in Palma, and another 70 were expected on Sunday, according to the airport.

On March 14, the government in Berlin removed Mallorca from its list of risk areas for corona as the number of new cases of infection in the last seven days fell below 50 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Thus, holidaymakers are no longer obliged to be quarantined or tested when they return home, even though Germany is experiencing a sharp increase in infection.

On Tuesday, however, a new regulation is expected, which means that everyone who comes to Germany by plane from abroad must present a negative coronate test.

Eurowings alone flew this weekend to Mallorca 44 times from nine different German airports, writes DPA. This is almost four times as many departures as the airline had last weekend.

Eurowings did not give exact passenger numbers, but said all the planes were “quite full,” according to a spokesman. The number of flights is still 40 percent lower than usual before the pandemic.
