Medical : All hormonal contraceptives may be associated with a low risk of depression or mood disorders. A large French study has just looked into the case of intrauterine devices (IUDs) containing levonorgestrel. It shows that the risk of using antidepressants in the two years following the insertion of the IUD is very slightly increased with a higher dosage of levonorgestrel, 52 mg versus 19.5 mg (RR=1.13). It is particularly important in women under 25 (RR=1.61). On the other hand, no increase in the consumption of anxiolytics or hypnotics was observed.
