Thousands of Cuban migrants who entered Mexico with the aim of reaching the United States in search of a better quality of life for themselves and their families on the Island are stranded in the city of Tapachula, located in the border state of Chiapas.
These, like thousands of other migrants from Venezuela, Nicaragua, Honduras and other Central and South American countries, have been waiting for months to be able to continue on their way, which is depleting their economic resources.
According to the news agency EFEMany of the foreigners have not been able to continue their journey north despite having appointments scheduled at CBP One. They have decided to request asylum before the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR), however, they have not received a response to this procedure either. .
The aforementioned media received information from the Center for Human Dignification (CDH) and other migrant defense organizations, which assure that the situation has become alarming and that COMAR was not doing its job.
The lawyer specializing in migration and vulnerable groups, José Luis Pérez, indicated that Tapachula was like a large “funnel” and a bottleneck that was in charge of stopping migrants, pointing out that the existence of COMAR was of no use if it did not help them. It offered the possibility of regularizing oneself in Aztec territory.
The official figures shared by EFE They point out that Cubans were the second nationality that most requested refuge in Mexico, with 2,352 requests so far this year, being surpassed only by Hondurans and their 3,213 requests.
The most worrying thing about the situation is the waiting times, since many of the applicants had to wait up to six months to receive a response from COMAR. As if that were not enough, many of these migrants claimed to receive a negative response after several months of waiting.
During 2023, Cubans ranked third in asylum requests in Mexico, making 18,386 requests, surpassed that year by Haiti and Honduras. This represents an increase of 1.09% compared to requests made during 2022.
As a result of this high waiting time, the number of applications, and their subsequent rejections, Cubans have seen the need to join the so-called migrant caravanswhere thousands of foreigners march in unison towards the northern border of the country, using numbers to avoid arrest by the immigration authorities.
