Thousands of Americans took to the streets on Sunday to protest anti-Asian racism. The protests took place in major cities such as New York, Washington and Atlanta, the capital of the state of Georgia. A 21-year-old gunman shot eight people dead in three incidents in Atlanta last week, six of whom were women of Asian descent.
Suspect Robert Aaron Long denied that he was motivated by racism. He argued that he had problems with a sex addiction and that he wanted to “eliminate” his “temptations.” The sheriff of Cherokee County, the district where one of the three shooting incidents took place, said it was too early to determine the motive for the murders.
Xin Hua, an American-Asian participant in the Washington rally, said she was upset about the police’s reluctance to state a motive. “It is a fact that six Asian women have been killed,” said Xin Hua.
