The research team believes the pile of bones was collected by carnivores, hyenas, since 7,000 years ago.
Umm Jirsan Cave is 64.37 kilometers (km) below the ground, formed from lava flows.
According to Live Science, the cave has been a hyena’s habitat for thousands of years.
The research team exploring the cave published an article about their findings in the journal Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences.
“The size and composition of the bone pile as well as the skeletal remains and fossil hyenas suggest that it was collected by striped hyenas,” explained the researchers.
A team of researchers studied a total of 1,900 bones found in the cave.
Of that number, more than 40 have been identified, including two human skull fragments.
Animal bones Others including camels, dogs, donkeys and goats were also found.
Study lead author Matthew Stewart told Live Science that the bones are believed to have been collected by a striped hyena in the Umm Jirsan cave.
