Thousands in Leipzig protest against AfD and for democracy

Leipzig (dpa/sn) – Many thousands of people demonstrated against the AfD and for democracy in Leipzig on Sunday. A police spokeswoman spoke of a large crowd and did not rule out a five-digit number of participants. According to a dpa reporter, the market square was overcrowded and people were also crowding into the side streets.

“We do not agree with what the AfD and its right-wing networks want. Never again fascism,” said Irena Rudolph-Kokot from the action network “Leipzig takes a seat,” which called for the demonstration. There were further demonstrations in Dresden, Chemnitz, Pirna, Radeberg, Torgau and Meißen.

Recently there were large demonstrations against the right in many cities across Germany after a meeting of right-wing radicals in Potsdam became known in November. AfD politicians, members of the ultra-conservative Values Union and Martin Sellner, the former head of the right-wing extremist Identitarian movement in Austria, also took part.
