Mthousands of people in various parts of Germany gathered last night to pay tribute to the nine victims of the shootings motivated by extreme right-wing xenophobic reasons that took place last Wednesday in two bars of shisha, in Hanau.
Among candles and flowers, in the vigils there were those who went out to the street also in protest with posters condemning the crimes of hate, racism and xenophobia, and against the rise of the extreme right in Germany.
“I couldn’t be more upset. We have to nip it in the bud if Nazism is back,” he said. Inge Bank, an 82-year-old man who lives near one of the bars where one of the shootings took place, quotes The Guardian.
“Never again!”, “Together we will overcome racism” and “Nazis, street!”, Were some of the phrases that marked the watchwords last night, all over Germany.
The alleged author of the “massacre” – the German Tobias Rathjen, 43 – was found dead after the shooting at his home near the body of his 72-year-old mother. Both the suspect and his mother had gunshot wounds, and the gun was found with Tobias, officials said.
A letter confessing to the crimes and a video are still to be found in his home, and in both cases the suspect defends extreme right-wing political positions.
The investigation of the attack was taken over by the German attorney general’s office and the case is being treated as an act of domestic terrorism.
